Kaohsiung Branch has been established since 1950. Before 1976, its main work was to process catches of marine fisheries in Taiwan and to carry out the biological investigation on coastal and offshore fisheries and the Branch was located at 7, Shaou-Chawn Street, Gu-San District Kaohsiung and in that year it was moved to the present office (1-1, North 1 st Road, Chien chen fishing Port, Kaohsiung). |

In order to follow the policy of developing the deep-sea fishing of Kaosiung, the researching task has been and management analysis of deep-sea fishing since 1984. The experimental processing research has also been restored to help the development of fishing processing industries in the southern Taiwan since 1988. |

Many new fishing ground for offshore fisheries are created by deploying fish aggregating devices (FADs). The life expectancy of sub-surface FADs has successfully been increased. The efficacy of long-life FADs was very significant to aggregate yellowfin and skipjack tunas. The work of deploying FADs in coastal waters of southwestern Taiwan will be continued, and the further develoment of setting FADs in the coastal waters of eastern Taiwan is going on. |

Studies on the Management of Trawler Fisheries Resource in the Waters off Southwestern Taiwan

¡@¡@The trawl fishery now has been important in the coastal waters off Taiwan since 1975. It was one of the main fisheries in the coastal waters of Taiwan. But, the demersal fish resources were distinctly exhausted owing to the water pollution and overfishing. The catchable stocks are gradually decreasing and the fishing conditions of trawlers are steadily worse.
¡@¡@To understand the status of fish resource of small trawl fishery and solve the difficulties of trawler operation, these experiments were carried out. It is needed to study monitoring and stock assessment on small trawl fishery resource in the water off Taiwan. These investigated data will provide the fishery administration and will be a basis of establishing the management policy for small trawl fishery. |

Biology and Resource Management of Sergestid Shrimp ( Sergia lucens ) in the Coastal Waters off Southwestern Taiwan

The sakura shrimp ( Sergia lucens ) is a pelagic planktonic shrimp that is caught commercially in the coastal waters off southwestern Taiwan. The main fishing grounds of sakura shrimp are located in an area from latitude 22¢X06¡¦ N to 22¢X27¡¦ N and longitude 120¢X12¡¦ E to 120¢X39¡¦ E at depths between 100 and 300 m. Fishing season is from November to May of the following year. The purpose of this research is to study the ecology of sakura shrimp and to collect fishing data and hydrographic data, to a nalyze in the factor influencing the sakura shrimp fishing ground to form and carried out monitor the fishing ground . The stock of the shrimp will then be evaluated in order to estimate yield and establish a sustainable management model. |

Development on processing technologies and improve traditional technologies of main fishes of Taiwan is one of the research work in this center. The hot smoked milkfish, hot smoked Pacific saury, hot smoked squid, cold smoked cobia, restructured milkfish steak, restructured tuna steak, restructured Pacific saury steak were developed, not only to determinate processing scheme but also to evaluate on the quality, acceptability, and its shelf life. |
