¡@ ¡@ Study on the fisheries resources of baby trawler in northern waters of Taiwan
In order to understand the fishing status of baby bottom trawler in the northern waters of Taiwan, basic fisheries data are collected from the local commercial fishing boats. Meanwhile, the survey of temporal and spatial distribution are also carried out. All results will be used as reference to the fisheries authorities for reasonable utilization and management on demersal fishery resources in the northern waters off Taiwan.

¡@ ¡@ The investigation on tuna fishing and oceanographic conditions from the adjacent waters off Taiwan
In order to understand the characteristics of the oceanographic condition of the tuna fishing ground and the mechanism of the fishing ground formation; first, the relationship between the SST and the water temperature in which the tunas inhabit is examined. Then the relation of fishing localities of tuna fishing vessels and the corresponding SST is analyzed. The results obtained from above studies may be considered as the primary criteria for determining the tuna fishing ground.

¡@ ¡@ Study on the distribution status of mackerel and scad larvae and juvenile in the waters off Taiwan
To understand the occurrence and distribution of the larval mackerels and scads in the waters off Taiwan, ORI net and CTD were used to collect the larvae and juvenile and investigate the environmental factors. The density of larvae and juvenile (inds./1000m 3 ) and Bray-Curtis similarity indices are used to understand the larval fish assemblages. Dominant species of larval mackerels and scads changed drastically with months and locations indicating the temporal succession and spatial segregation.

¡@ ¡@ Environmental monitoring of fishing ground in the coastal waters around Taiwan

This project aimed at establishing long term fisheries environmental hydrographic database and numerical models of fisheries prediction combined with variations of fishing resources. Data collection was carried out by research vessel, Fishery Research No. 1, of fisheries research institute. The data of sea temperature, salinity, density, nutrient contents, chlorophyll- a , and zooplankton were collected by casting CTD and water columns in 62 stations of coastal waters around Taiwan. Four cruises are conducted by season annually.

¡@ ¡@ The investigation and exploitation of the underutilized resources at the deep-sea off eastern Taiwan
The main purpose of present study is to establish basic information for the species identification, ecological conservations, exploitation of the deep-sea macruran decapods, fishes, and cephalopods resources at the deep-sea off eastern Taiwan.

¡@ ¡@ Assessment of the fish egg and larva resources in the coastal waters off Taiwan

To clarify the spatial and temporal dynamics of larval fish assemblages in the coastal waters off Taiwan, a 5-year study was conducted from 2004. The larvae were collected from 60 stations in 30 estuaries of Taiwan seasonally with surface towing of Maruchi-D net. More than 500 species, about ? of Taiwanese fishes, were collected from 2004 to 2006. The abundant species were mackerel, scad, skipjack, sparids, and scienids in our collections. They were the dominant economical target species of Taiwan. In addition, more than 50 species of myctophiforms and stomiiforms were collected in our study, but they were scarcely recorded in the past of Taiwan.

¡@ ¡@ Community structure of planktonic copepod in I-Lan Bay and the adjacent Kuroshio waters off northeastern Taiwan
A total of 166 species of copepods were identified. Apparent seasonal fluctuations in the composition of dominant species were observed by replacement rates. Geographical variation in distributional associations of the copepod community occurred over a seasonal scale, and the intermediate region was mainly influenced by the Kuroshio Current. Calanus sinicus might be considered an indicator species for the intrusion of eddy waters from the East China Sea into I-Lan Bay and its adjacent waters.
The diversiform planktonic copepods are the most dominant mesoplankton in I-Lan Bay and its adjacent waters .

¡@ ¡@ Establishment of database of mtDNA sequences for economically important marine species in Taiwan
Smuggling and illegal import of aquatic products are considered to be serious problems. The identification of aquatic product is often difficult even for an expert that was due to incomplete individual specimens. FRI is using DNA technology, first to build a database of mitochondrial DNA sequences for economically important marine species in Taiwan and secondly to match DNA sequences from our database to marine species which are obtained from smuggling and illegal import of aquatic products. This database not only use for identification but also for evolutionary systematic study.
