Studies on forestation of macroalgae
 |
Macroalgae are keys to the prosperities of marine resources. Forestation of macroalgae at proper sites would help provide habitats for broodings, inhabitations, reproductions and feedings to marine organisms. Meanwhile, macroalgae also can absorb carbon dioxide to mitigate global warming. Polysaccharides extracted from them can be not only fermented to alcohol for biomass energy but also used for food and other commodities. |

Studies on improvements and restorations of habitats in coral ecosystems at Chin-wan Inner Bay

Well-developed coral communities were found at Chin-wan Inner Bay (CIB). CIB was declared as fishery reserves in 2004. However, the habitats were gradually deteriorated. For the sake of biodiversity conservations, fishery managements and avoiding affecting functions of Penghu Marine Biology Research Center, following procedures will be carried on:
1. Improvements and restorations of habitats;
2. Establishments of techniques for propagations of coral asexual ramets;
3. Cultivations of sexual recruits of corals;
4. Long-term monitoring of important functional groups associated with coral ecosystems. |

Studies on the substantial aquatic genetic stock and cultural techniques in Penghu island
 |
The objectives of this study are establishment of genetic stock and cultural techniques of Spotted babylons, Babylonia areolata , Octopus spp.and coral trout, Plectropomus leopardus . The stock will be collected and preserved for utilization of aquaculture. S tudies of monitoring and stock assessment on Octopus spp. fishery resource in the water of PengHu are also needed . These investigated data will provide the fishery administration to establish the management policy for Octopus spp. fishery. The coral trout is an important commercial species and very much relished sea food in Taiwan. As the supply of wild fingerlings is limited and uncertain. Therefore , there is a need to establish breeding technique s for mass production of coral trout fingerlings. We have to study the development of embryos, larval rearing, establish ing the broodstock of parent fish, and keep ing good quality genetic strain f or aquaculture. For improve the techniques of coral trout culture and produce mass seed. |

Studies on the reproduction of Horseshoe crab, Tachypleus tridentatus

The horseshoe crab, Tachypleus tridenta tus, is known as a living fossil. It is an very important material for scientific and medical research. Tachypleus tridentatus once distributed widely along the west coast of Taiwan ha bitats decades ago. It is almost eliminated from the coast as a result of pollution s and degradation s . In Taiwan now , Tachypleus tridentatus , can only be found in Kimmen and Penghu island. Tachypleus tridentatus in Penghu is facing survival crisis. Thus, conservation need to be done immediatly . The objectives of this study are establishment of genetic stock and cultural techniques of Tachypleus tridentatus . The stock will be collected and preserved for utilization f or researchers. The tank system, diet s , growth s , mature size s , spawning season s , embryonic development s , hatching s , and larvae rearing s will be studied. The knowledge will be very valuable for the mass seed production. |

To find better methods for marine aquarium organisms transportation:various procedure and equipments for different marine organisms will be designed to find the best way to transport them. |

Searching a better circumstance for marine aquarium organisms : elements affected the marine organisms such as water quality, temperature, water current, light, stock density and feeding will be compared . |

Sea pen is an octo coral. Most of Sea pen s live in deeper water in Penghu except Chito bay where the Sea pen lives at intertidal. We still don't understand why they choose the different habitat from the others. So, we want to know their distribution s and abundance s in Chito bay. we will keep on studying it's ecology role and at reproduction at ntertidal zone in the future. |

Distribution and abundance of Octopus sp. nov. TW10 at the intertidal zone of Penghu

This Octopus sp. nov. TW10 is a new species. It is an important economic species of Penghu. They appeared at intertidal zone from February to May and spawned dur in g July to August. Each female is about 26 and the egg's length is about 2 centimeter s . This Octopus's biomass has been decreased yester year, so we decide to study their culture and reproduction. Research es on distribution s and abundance s of Octopus sp . not only help raise its economic value but also conserve the habitat in the future. |
