Highly tolerance to stress factors is one of major reasons that make tilapia become aninternational cultured species. However, the slow growth rate remains the major hurdleof red tilapia culture. In general, selection and breeding is an traditional strategy toenhance the growth performance but it takes long time to reach the goal. With theadvance of biotechnology, different strategies can be employed to resolve the problem ofslow growth of red tilapia. In this project, DNA marker assisted selection and breeding, and gamete cryopreservation will be used to establish strains of red tilapia with enhancedgrowth rate.
