Recently, aquaculture was well developed in Taiwan, but some species of aquaticanimals also showed poor survival and growth in hatchery or grow-out ponds. Bacterialdiseases and virus are considered to be a major cause of mortality in fish and shrimpculture. It is therefore important that the use of probiotic bacteria to suppress thepresence or inhibit the growth of potential pathogens for improving health, activity ofaquatic animals and promoting the water quality of the surrounding water need to bedeveloped. The aim of this project is to research for appropriate probiotics to maintain ahealthy microbial environment in the larviculture or grow-out pond for enhance health, activity of aquatic animals obtain higher survival rate and reduce the abuse ofantimicrobials in the future. The object of these studies include the following aspects:(1)Probiotics will be used in the larval culture of grouper, either delivered directly into thewater of tanks, or via live carriers such as copepod nauplii. Besides, the potent herbalmedicine is screened against pathogens of the aquatic animals by sensitivity method ofdrug, and then prepared becoming the herbal diets for the challenge experiment usingpathogens to evaluate the therapeutic effect and usage of the herbal medicine.(2) Thepurpose is to study the bacterial flora and to clear the bacterial composition in thedigestive tract of shrimps. Here, to investigate the bacterial composition between normalshrimp and diseased shrimp in the digestive tract. In addition, our research is to useprobiotic bacteria to add into the shrimp culture ponds and as feed additives for shrimpto inhibit the Vibriosis, WSSV, and finally to achieve the goal of increasing the survivalrate of pond shrimps. (3) Environmental promotion to increase managemental techniqueand ovary quality of grey mullet reared in earthen pond treated with microorganismproduct will be studied in this study. It would make more profits and less lose for thoseaquaculture owners.
