In order to plan the suitable areas for deploying subsurface FADs, a large scale of sea bottom survey had been carried out in the coastal waters of Hualian County. The sharp seabed changes were observed. The depth of sea bottom can up to 1,000 meters at a distance of about 4 nautical miles from the coastal lines. Even only in the range of hundreds meters from the coastal lines, the depth of sea bottom can reach to about 200 meters. Considering the influence of terrain, we suggest that the areas, with less than 1,000 meters depth of sea bottom and less than 3 nautical miles distance from the coastal lines, will be the suitable areas for deploying the subsurface FADs in the future. In this year, two locations were chosen from the suitable areas to deploy subsurface FADs. The investigation of gathering effect for the existing subsurface FADs located in the coastal waters of eastern Taiwan showed that the mainly caught species were yellow fin tuna (74%), dolphin fish (9.7%) and Skipjack tuna (8.6%). The total catch of yellow fin tuna was about 700 metric tons in this year.
