Oyster aquaculture is a major fishery production in Penghu County, generating an average annual output of about $270 million for Penghu. However, it also generates about 3,000 tons of oyster shells per year, which have accumulated into about 60,000 metric tons of agricultural waste. Oyster shells are composed mainly of calcium carbonate (CaCO3), which is an extremely promising resource material. However, because Penghu is an outlying island, it is not suitable to be transported to Taiwan for processing due to transportation costs and carbon footprint issues. Therefore, it is important to develop a local resource and application method that is in line with the spirit of circular economy and can achieve the goal of reducing carbon emissions. This project aims to solve the problem of oyster shell waste in Penghu and to promote its application. We plan to analyze and evaluate the production sites of oyster shells in Penghu, and establish a recycling mechanism to design a resource production line based on the production pattern of oyster shells. The oyster shells will be processed and turned into usable materials for subsequent community operation. We will also introduce applied technologies, such as alkaline excitation and 3D printing, for cement replacement, community production applications, and agricultural materials. We aim to achieve the goal of circular economy and to solve the problem of oyster shell waste at this stage.
