The sakura shrimp (Sergia lucens Hansen) is a pelagic planktonic shrimp that is caughtcommercially in the Suruga Bay of Japan and the coastal waters off southwesternTaiwan. In Taiwan, the main fishing grounds of S. lucens are located in from betweenlatitude 22º 6'N and 22º 27' N to longitude 120º 12'E and 120º 39'E. The area of fishing grounds, about 320km2, was only located in theisobath line of sea bottom between 100m and 300m in depth. The fishing season wasduring the period from November to May next year. The sakura shrimp with thin shell, rich in calcium and directly consumed by people, was a precious stock in the coastalwaters of Taiwan. At the present time, however, few papers have been published forstudying this shrimp. Therefore, to understand the ecology of S. lucens and mechanismof fishing ground formation, the fishing data, sea condition and S. lucens samples werecollected monthly. We also want to study the initial usable stock size and the resourceassessment of S. lucens for estimating the optimum yield and establishing the sustainablemanagement model. The present study is an extension and continuities of our previous study on deep-seafishery resources. The main purpose is to establish basic information for the speciesidentification, ecological conservations, exploitation of resources, etc., of the macrurandecapods and deep-sea cephalopods. The sonar sounding records of the present studyshow that the sakura shrimp (Sergia lucens) is distributed in the waters around the GueishanIslet and undertakes an apparent diurnal vertical migration. The resources areestimated to 333 metric tons.On the other hand, the sex of Thysanotheuthis rhombus may be distinguished visuallygreater than 250mm ML. The sexual ratio shows that the males are more than femalesaround the year, except January to March. Testis maturation has been observed in maleat 250-350mm and ovary maturation in female at 500-650 mm. The smallest maturefemale observed was 500mm ML, and the majority mature at 550-650mm ML.Spermatophores of male beginning from 570mm ML, and majority mature 650mm ML.
