Up to present, 23 cruises have been conducted in this project. In addition to seasonal wind and the sea floor variation, hydrographic conditions in the surrounding waters of Taiwan are mainly influenced by the Kuroshio Current, Kuroshi Branch Current, South China Sea Current and China Coastal Current. Seasonal variations of hydrographic condition were more conspicuous in the western and northern waters of Taiwan. The results from Feb. 2003 to Mar. 2008 showed that the abundance of zooplankton peaked in spring and summer. The occurrence of commercial Crab-larvae and Shrimp-larvae peaked in summer and autumn, while Fish-larvae and Fish-egg peaked in spring and summer. Positive correlation with temperature was observed for Fish-egg and Fish-larvae, while negative for Crab-larvae. Negative correlation with salinity was observed for zooplankton, Crab-larvae and Shrimp-larvae, while positive for Fish-larvae. Positive correlation with chlorophyll-a was observed for zooplankton, Crab-larvae and Shrimp-larvae. Negative correlation with wind speed was observed for zooplankton, Fish-larvae and Fish-egg(p<0.05). A total of 123 genus of Fish-larvae, belonged to 62 Family, were collected by cruse 1 in 2008. Gonostoma gracile was predominant, which comprised 27.04% of the Fish-lar. Probably a result of cold water, the abundance of Fish-larvae was lower in the northern stations.
