Seahorse is one kind of rare and exotic teleost fish. It is one of the precious, high-valued Chinese medicine material. Several aquaculture techniques of seahorse have already been built in Penghu Center, so now we aim to evaluate its health applications. Eight-week-old Sprague-Dawley (SD) rats were fed with feed containing alcohol extracts of Hippocampus kuda . A (Control): ddH2O; B (Low-dose): 100 mg /kg; C (Mid-dose): 250 mg/kg and D (High-dose): 500 mg/kg. The results of blood urea nitrogen (BUN) and blood lactic acid experiments showed that there was no statistically significant difference between each groups. In the ninth week, Group C (Mid-dose) had the largest increase of creatine kinase (CK) and the less increase of body weight. The increase of body weight before and after the experiment: A (Control)>B (Low-dose)>D (High-dose)>C (Middose), which revealed that the metabolism of Group A (Control) was higher. The result of the rats' swimming test also showed that Group C (Mid-dose) had the lowest lactic acid production. The concentration of testosterone in blood increased rapidly after being fed with testosterone for five weeks, which revealed a quick effectiveness after ingesting alcohol extracts of Hippocampus kuda for five weeks. The testosterone concentration in testis of Group D (High-dose) SD rats is higher than Group A (Control) after experiment. The overall evaluation of this animal experiment of alcohol extracts of Hippocampus kuda showed that the optimal is Group C (Mid-dose).
